NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – Travelers will now have non-binary gender options when booking with United after the airline became the first in the U.S. to offer the choice, according to an announcement Friday.
Passengers will no longer be limited to an M for male and F for female. They'll have the option to choose a U for “undisclosed” or an X for “unspecified.”

United is also offering the gender-neutral title “Mx” to its customers.
In a statement, United’s Chief Customer Officer Toby Enqvist wrote: “United is excited to share with our customers, whether they identify along the binary of male or female or not, that we are taking the steps to exhibit our care for them while also providing additional employee training to make us even more welcoming for all customers and employees.”
The transgender and non-binary community praised Friday’s announcement.
“These changes by United and other airlines is in line with the growing number of states who offer gender neutral designations on IDs and is an important step toward ensuring safe and smooth travel for all passengers regardless of their gender,” Gillian Branstetter, a spokeswoman for the National Center for Transgender Equality, wrote in a statement.
