TORONTO (1010 WINS) — Canada is about to get a taste of a New York City burger staple.

Shake Shack announced on Wednesday that it will enter the Canadian market officially in 2024, beginning with the opening of a flagship location in Toronto.

"We have been eyeing this incredible opportunity in Canada for quite some time and are elated to have found exceptional partners to serve Shack classics and bespoke Canada-exclusive items to our sophisticated neighbours [neighbors] to the north," said Michael Kark, Shake Shack’s chief global licensing officer, in a statement.

While the chain, which began as a hot dog cart in Madison Square Park, did not reveal other location plans, it did state that it plans to open 35 Shake Shacks by 2035.

According to Shake Shack, it will feature signature Shake Shack items such as the ShackBurger, Chicken Shack, crinkle cut fries, frozen custard and more, as well as collaborate with local producers "to create a special Shack experience unique to the Toronto community."

Its expansion will be in collaboration with two Toronto-based private equity firms: Osmington Inc., a private commercial real estate and investment company owned and controlled by David Thomson, and Harlo Entertainment, a division of Harlo Group that operates and invests in hospitality properties including several restaurants in Toronto.

The decision to open locations in Canada comes after Shake Shack opened a one-day pop-up restaurant in Toronto in 2017.
