NEWARK, N.J. (1010 WINS) — Three people, including two young children, were shot on Wednesday while stopped at a traffic light with their mother in Newark.

Newark Public Safety Director Brian O’Hara said police responded at around 5:50 p.m. to Irvine Turner Boulevard and West Kinney Street on a call of shots fired.
A 4-year-old boy was shot in the face, while a 7-year-old boy and a 30-year-old man in the car were also struck. PIX 11 reports their mother was uninjured.
All of the victims were transported to University Hospital.
"We are saddened and outraged that two boys, one 4-year-old and one 7-year-old, were shot tonight while riding in a car with their mother and another adult," said O'Hara in a statement.
O’Hara said the gunman, who remains at large, used a car stolen from Kearny that was left unlocked with the key inside.
"We need people everywhere to stop leaving their cars unlocked with the key in them," he added. "This kind of carelessness is repeatedly contributing to violence and enabling more serious harm to occur in our communities."
An investigation remains ongoing.
