The multi-alarm fire in a Passaic apartment building on Main Avenue started around 3:30 p.m. Dozens of the building’s residents were evacuated after the fire broke out, said Passaic Mayor Hector Lora.

Lora said the five people who were hospitalized are a 65-year-old woman, a woman in her 40s, a 19-year-old man and two children. Their conditions are unknown.

“By the grace of God and the amazing work of our firefighters, we do not have any loss of life confirmed right now,” the mayor said.

Lora added that the fire was under control by 6 p.m.

Officials said there are seven apartment units in the main structure and one of the buildings affected by the fire will be evacuated for at least the night with impacted residents being taken to city hall where the Red Cross will be assisting them.
