3 dead, 5 injured after speeding driver sparks 4-car crash on Long Island

MASSAPEQUA, N.Y. (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- Three people are dead and five more injured after a speeding driver sparked a horrific, multi-vehicle pileup in Nassau County on Sunday evening, police said.

The driver was speeding westbound on Sunrise Highway in Massapequa at 7:20 p.m. when they plowed into three other vehicles near 5598 Sunrise Hwy., right across from Sunrise Mall.

The impact was so fierce that some of the vehicles appear to have flipped over. Glass and car parts littered the roadway.

Police and paramedics had to climb on top of some of the vehicles to extricate the victims.

Three people were pronounced dead.

Five other people were rushed to area hospitals with various injuries.

Two of them were in critical condition, two more were in stable condition and a fifth was treated and released overnight.

Police haven't released the names or ages of the victims.

It's unclear if the speeding driver was among those killed or hospitalized.

Sunrise Highway was closed for nine hours overnight as detectives investigated.
