NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A Fire Island lifeguard was bitten by a shark Thursday -- possibly the third such attack in the waters off Long Island in the past week -- prompting a ban on swimming at Ocean Beach until further notice, the village's mayor said.
"We've spotted a few of these little buggers in the water outside our jurisdiction," Mallott said. "We'll look in the morning and make sure it's as safe as we can make it."
The lifeguard was bitten by the shark near his left foot while conducting a training exercise about 150 to 200 yards from the shoreline. He then swam back to shore, where the Ocean Beach fire chief confirmed it was a shark bite, according to Newsday. He was then transported a hospital, treated and released.
State officials said the shark was likely a tiger shark about three-to-five feet in length.
On Wednesday, Davis Park Beach on Fire Island was temporarily closed because of a shark sighting.
On Sunday, Suffolk County lifeguard Zachari Gallo was bitten by shark on the chest and hand in the waters off Smith Point County Park.
And on June 30, a man was bitten in the foot, possibly by a shark, in the waters off Jones Beach.
