LINDENHURST, N.Y. (1010 WINS) — A 13-year-old boy was stabbed with a 6-inch knife by a 12-year-old peer in a hallway of their Suffolk County middle school on Monday, police said.
Suffolk County police were called to Lindenhurst Middle School on South Wellwood Avenue around 12:30 p.m.
The victim was stabbed in the upper groin area of his leg, according to police, and was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he is in critical but stable condition.
Authorities said the boy lost a lot of blood and was undergoing surgery at the hospital.
According to Suffolk County Police Deputy Inspector Sean Beran, the attack occurred during a dispute between the two students.
Beran said the 12-year-old was taken into custody and will be charged with juvenile delinquency.
An investigation into the stabbing and how the boy was able to bring the knife to the school is ongoing.
Superintendent Anthony J. Davidson said in a statement to "Lindenhurst school families" that after the altercation, the building was immediately placed on lockdown and police were called.
"To allow for the police to continue with their investigation, please be advised that the building will remain under lockdown until further notice," Davidson said in the statement. "With a lockdown, individuals are not permitted to enter or leave the school building. As such, we ask our parents/guardians to refrain from coming to the middle school to try and sign their child(ren) out of school. Please know, all other students are remaining in their classrooms and are safely in the care of our staff."
"I recognize that hearing about today’s isolated incident is concerning for all," he added. "Be assured, that the safety and security of our students and staff is our top priority. We will continue to keep you posted on any new developments as our school day continues to progress."
The stabbing happened less than two hours after a 28-year-old woman shot and killed three children and three adults at a private Christian school in Nashville. The woman was then killed by police.
