NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — New York Republican Rep. George Santos has reached a deal with prosecutors in Brazil in a case in which he is accused of defrauding a Rio de Janeiro clerk of $1,300 over clothing and shoes in 2008, documents show.

According to the records obtained by CNN, a petition from Santos' attorney requesting a deal states that Santos would agree to formally confess to the crime and pay damages to the victim as required by Brazilian law.

A memo from prosecutors last week requested assurances from the defense that they will be able to contact the victim to repay him before the agreement is finalized.

According to the report, agreements in non-violent cases can be reached where the sentence minimum is less than four years.

In December, the then-Long Island representative-elect told the New York Post that he had not been charged with any crime in Brazil.

"I am not a criminal here – not here or in Brazil or any jurisdiction in the world. Absolutely not. That didn’t happen," he told the paper.

After Santos left for the United States, Brazilian authorities were reportedly unable to locate an address at which to serve him with papers summoning him to appear in court, resulting in the case being archived until it was reopened in January.

CNN reached out to attorneys for Santos in Brazil and the U.S.

Prosecutors could not comment further because the case is under a gag order.
