NEWARK, N.J. (1010 WINS) — An SUV was stolen Tuesday night with a three-month-old baby in the back seat, the Essex County Sheriff’s Office announced Thursday.

Officers found the car abandoned in Newark’s South Ward later that night and recovered the baby unharmed.

The vehicle was stolen around 8 p.m. — setting off a search that involved multiple agencies including the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Law enforcement located the car around 11 p.m.

The baby seemed unharmed when it was found, but EMS brought it to University Hospital for an evaluation as a precaution.

Officials did not say why the baby was alone in the car.

The thief remained at-large as of Thursday afternoon.
