CROMWELL, CT (1010 WINS) — Connecticut Democratic State Representative Quentin “Q” Williams was killed early Thursday in a wrong-way crash on a highway, according to officials. He was 39.
The crash happened on Route 9 in Cromwell just after midnight when a car going in the wrong direction collided head-on with Williams’ vehicle.
Williams’ car went up in flames on the shoulder of the road, officials said. Emergency responders later pronounced him dead at the scene.
The driver of the other vehicle also died as a result of the crash. An autopsy is being performed to confirm the victims’ identities.
Williams was killed less than 24 hours after he was sworn in for his third term in office. He was the first African American to represent the city of Middletown in the Connecticut general Assembly.
Governor Ned Lamont ordered state flags to be at half-staff in honor of Williams. The Legislative Office Building was also closed Thursday with committee meetings canceled as well.
"Quentin had an infectiously optimistic personality, and he absolutely loved having the opportunity to represent his lifelong home of Middletown at the State Capitol,” Lamont tweeted. “Public service was his passion. He was a genuine person with a genuine soul, and he will be missed "
