PERTH AMBOY, N.J. (1010 WINS) — A New Jersey boy who was stabbed with a kitchen knife Wednesday by another student near their middle school is in stable condition, a city official said Friday.

The stabbing happened around 2:35 p.m. on Johnstone Street between Sutton and Ridgeley streets, following their dismissal from Samuel E. Shull Middle School in Perth Amboy, city spokesperson Lisette Lebron told NJ.com.

Lebron said the boy acted alone and that the stabbing was an "isolated incident."

The stabbing occurred near one of the boys' homes, a few blocks from the school, according to the head of the school district's teacher's union, who spoke to the outlet on Thursday.

The sixth-grade student was charged with juvenile delinquency for crimes that would have resulted in attempted murder, aggravated assault, and weapons charges if done by an adult.

Perth Amboy Federation president Patricia Paradiso said Thursday that fights are frequent at the school and that several students have been caught with knives. The school does not have metal detectors.

According to state education data, the school has around 1,400 students in classes five through eight.

Anyone with video footage and information to help in the ongoing investigation is asked to contact Perth Amboy Detective Omar Rivera at (732) 324-3868.
