JERSEY CITY, N.J. (1010 WINS) — A fire in Jersey City interrupted NJ Transit light rail service on Tuesday.

The Richard Street blaze sent smoke billowing over the East River which was visible from Manhattan and Brooklyn.

As of 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail line suspended service in both directions between Liberty State Park and 45th Street Station, according to NJ Transit.

Commuters can follow live updates on the transit company’s website.

The fire broke out as much of New Jersey and New York City is under a red flag fire warning until 7 p.m. The red flag indicates a critical fire weather warning brought about by high pressure, dry air and a light breeze — perfect conditions for fires to ignite and spread.
