NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — As of June, Jersey City has the most expensive average rent in the country, beating out the Big Apple and other notoriously expensive municipalities like San Francisco and D.C., according to a report from the rental listing service Rent.com.

Researchers said they didn’t have enough listing data to accurately calculate New York City’s average rent, though the real estate firm Douglas Elliman estimated the monthly rent in Manhattan to be just over $5,000 in June.

Boston came in second place, followed by a string of California cities in Silicon Valley and the Los Angele exurbs.

White Plains and Yonkers came in at numbers 19 and 43 respectively.

In an interview with the New York Times, Rent.com researcher Jon Leckie attributed the price to Jersey City commuters who travel into New York City for work.

The rise in remote work during the pandemic may have made some more comfortable with longer, but less frequent commutes, according to Leckie.

“They stay regional,” said Leckie of renters who left New York City for more spacious spots across the Hudson. “Jersey City is a proxy for New York City in a lot of ways.”

Rent prices across the country surged past pre-pandemic rates after a major dip in cost during lockdown.
