CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. (1010 WINS) — A Long Island man has pleaded guilty to sexually abusing a girl over a four-year period and is due to be sentenced to 12 years in prison, the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office announced Thursday.

According to court documents and the guilty plea allocution, Yonathan Ramirez Argueta, 28, sexually abused the girl between May 2018 and April 2022, from the time she was 5 years old until she disclosed the abuse at the age of 9.

After the disclosure, Argueta "immediately" fled to Georgia and attempted to board a one-way flight to Central America.

Ramirez Argueta's attempt to evade prosecution was thwarted when he was arrested and extradited back to Suffolk County to face these charges, prosecutors said.

Ramirez Argueta pleaded guilty on Wednesday to charges of first-degree and second-degree course of sexual conduct against a child, as well as with endangering the welfare of a child.

It's not immediately clear how he knew the victim.

"No child should ever once be subjected to such abuse, let alone to have it last over the course of four years of their young life," said Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney. "This defendant picked a defenseless innocent child to abuse and what he did is simply unacceptable."

Tierney said the plea deal "saves the victim from having to testify."

Ramirez Argueta is expected to face 18 years of post-release supervision in addition to his jail sentence, the prosecutor's office said.

He is scheduled to be sentenced on March 22.
