NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A two-alarm fire that ravaged a Brooklyn apartment early Monday caused four people to be taken to local hospitals, with two of them left fighting for their lives.

Reinaldo Caba, whose mother lives in the six-story Williamsburg building, said that she had to be rescued after being trapped in her unit at 381 Berry St.

"I'm just concerned about the neighbors from next door that are in the hospital," he said. "Everybody knows everybody here."

Multiple residents escaped as the fire raged through an older woman's fifth-floor apartment just before 4:30 a.m.

Angel Pelicier, a next-door neighbor, said that the entire unit was "gutted" in the blaze.

"My other neighbor was helping the elderly lady next door down the stairs and a huge plume of smoke just entered the apartment," he added.

It took a little over an hour to put out the fire. Residents are now left to clean up the water and soot left behind.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
