The New York Post reports the law enforcement operation began around midnight Thursday and ended at 8 a.m., seizing the cars with the fake plates across the entire borough.

New York City Sheriff Joseph Fucito described the investigation to the Post, saying it follows a citywide pattern meant to evade speed cameras, toll payments and other means for public safety.

As of Friday morning, 411 vehicles with fake plates have been taken in by officials, with more than 400 traffic summonses issued in total.

58 people have also been charged for the phony plates.

Authorities will now investigate who owns the seized vehicles after deputies used plate reader technology and patrols to identify the illegal practice in the overnight operation.

Fucito said 45 summonses were also issued for any traffic and parking misconduct uncovered.
