The poll, which was conducted by John Zogby Strategies on behalf of Voters for Animal Rights and the Animal Legal Defense Fund, surveyed 501 voters.

A little over 71% said they support banning horse carriages. Just under 14% opposed the legislation, and 15% said they were undecided.

Queens Councilmember Robert Holden introduced legislation in July that would end the use of horse-drawn carriages in the city.

Recent video of a carriage driver hitting a horse after it collapsed led to a renewed wave of calls to end the use of horse-drawn carriages in New York City.

The horse from the video was retired to a farm upstate after the incident.
