NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A woman seeking asylum died by suicide at a New York City shelter Sunday, Mayor Eric Adams said Monday.
"The thousands of asylum seekers we have seen arrive in our city came to this country seeking a better life," Adams said in a statement. "Sadly though, yesterday, an asylum seeker in one of our facilities took her own life."
It comes as a record number of buses —at least 9 — arrived on Sunday, according to the New York Post, and at least 11,000 migrants have already entered the city since the beginning of this summer.
Adams is also now reportedly weighing whether to house asylum seekers arriving in the city on cruise ships.
Adams' chief of staff, Frank Carone, has spoken with leaders of Norwegian Cruise Line, to discuss the possibility, a source told The New York Times. Carone stayed on one of their ships in France, last month, as part of the administration’s research, the source said.
Though by law, the city is prohibited from sharing further information on the woman's death at this time, Adams said their "hearts break for this young woman and any loved ones she may have" and that the city "[mourns] her."

"This tragedy is a reminder that we have an obligation to do everything in our power to help those in need," he added.
Adams said one of the services available at the Asylum Seeker Resource Navigation Center is mental health care and encouraged any migrant seeking help to "utilize these services, and anyone in our city struggling with anxiety, depression, or mental health challenges of any kind to call 888-NYC-WELL. We are here for you."
