"This defendant executed the victim in cold blood, shooting him at close range as he slept in his bed," Gonzalez said. "Thanks to the quick action of law-enforcement he was apprehended as he attempted to flee the state, and this sentence ensures that he is held accountable for this shocking and heartless murder."
The Sunset Park resident, 44-year-old Sam Chen, and the victim, Da Li, rode to Li’s hotel room on 51st Street near 7th Avenue in Sunset Park together around 8:16 a.m. on June 26, court documents show.
Both Chen and Li got out of the car and entered the hotel. A short time after, Chen was seen on surveillance video leaving, officials said.
Around 12:45 p.m., Chen was seen on surveillance video returning to the victim’s hotel, putting on a surgical mask and entering the building. Not long after, Chen was seen again leaving the hotel with a surgical mask still on, according to authorities.
Li’s body was discovered two days later by hotel cleaning staff. The 46-year-old was in the bed with two gunshot wounds to his forehead. Police also recovered two 9mm shell casings at the scene.
