NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- Officials in Guyana on Wednesday confirmed that an NYPD officer vacationing in the South American nation drowned in the waters in a jungle and mountain region near the border with Brazil on Sunday.

Officer Gladstone Hayne's body was recovered by a search party Wednesday morning, according to police spokesman Mark Ramotar, who gave no other details.

Police said Hayne, 43, of the 70th Precinct in Flatbush was swimming in the waters at the Orinduik Falls with the mother of his children when he was pulled under by a strong current and disappeared.

Haynes was on a tour at the popular tourist site in the heavily forested Potaro Region.

The NYPD confirmed Hayes' disappearance on Tuesday and that they were assisting Guyanese authorities in the search.

“We are assisting the state department and local authorities with their investigation,” an NYPD spokesman said.

Officer Haynes is originally from Guyana and joined the NYPD in 2000 and as been at the 70th Precinct since 2017. His father was member of the Guyanese police force.
