NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- A 12-year-old boy was shot and wounded in the lobby of a Brooklyn apartment building on Tuesday night, police said as they investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

The boy went down with a gunshot wound to his shoulder around 9:20 p.m. inside 325 Bristol St. in Brownsville.

He was rushed barely conscious to Maimonides Medical Center, where he was in critical but stable condition on Wednesday.

The gun was recovered on the ground along with a single shell casing, police said.

At this point, investigators believe it was an accidental discharge. They’re investigating different angles, including the possibility that the boy accidentally shot himself.

He was with other young people when the gun went off, according to witnesses.

No arrests have been reported as police review surveillance footage and look to interview whoever was nearby at the time of the gunfire.
