NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — Ever since Lea Michele joined the cast of "Funny Girl" in September, following the departure of Beanie Feldstein and Jane Lynch, ticket sales have spiked.

So it comes as no surprise that the musical revival broke an all-time box office record last week with over $2 million in ticket sales.

The show, which performs at the August Wilson Theatre, brought in $2.005 million over eight performances during the week ending on Dec. 18, making it the highest grossing show at the theatre.

Before “Funny Girl,” “Mean Girls” held the highest grossing spot with $1.994 million in 2018.

News of “Funny Girl’s” success comes as many other shows are struggling to turn pre-pandemic profits. Performances such as “Phantom of the Opera” announced it would be closing in 2023 while “Ain’t No Mo” has had to rely on celebrity ticket buy outs for survival.

“Funny Girl” opened in April and faced poor reviews and low turnout. Beanie Feldstein and Jane Lynch left the show earlier this year because of the reception. But when Michele was cast in September, the show’s ticket sales have been on the upswing with nearly full capacities each night.
