Marquis Tanner, 30, pleaded guilty in March to manslaughter charges for shooting Alexandria Winchester, 24, in the neck over a money dispute at the Washington Park basketball court on 183rd Street near Park Avenue on December 26, 2020.

“The defendant shot and killed the victim after a dispute,” said Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark. “The defendant will now spend more than two decades in prison for this senseless shooting.”

Winchester was pronounced dead at the scene, and Tanner fled. Police arrested him three days later.

Winchester was living at an LGBTQ youth homeless shelter at the time of the shooting, according to the Gay City News.

“This week we learned that one of our clients, Alexandria Winchester, a young transgender woman of color, was murdered on the streets of our city,” wrote the Alie Forney Center, a LGBTQ community center, in a Facebook post. “We do not know whether she was targeted because of her identity. We are shattered, but our dedication is not broken.”

The judge sentenced Tanner to five years of post-release supervision in addition to his 22-year sentence.
