NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A man shot in the neck and torso in the Bronx over a year ago has died as a result of his wounds, police said Thursday.

Jose Bencosme, 23, was shot on March 7, 2022, around 6:50 p.m. on East 165th Street near Sherman Avenue in the Concourse section.

EMS transported him to NYC Health & Hospitals/Lincoln, where he died last Friday.

His death has been deemed a homicide, but a motive remained unclear Thursday.

Police arrested Kelvin Mejia, 22, for the shooting on June 3, 2022.

Mejia was charged with attempted criminally negligent homicide, assault, criminal use of a firearm and criminal possession of a firearm. He was ordered held on $50,000 bail.

According to the Daily News, his case is still pending in Bronx Criminal Court, but sources told the paper that charges against him are expected to be upgraded now that Bencosme has died.
