NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — Mayor Eric Adams was whisked away from a public appearance in Williamsburg on Friday after someone hurled a can of energy drink near him, but not before it hit a member of his security detail.

Adams, 61, was speaking with reporters after a public housing renovation announcement at a NYCHA building on Taylor Street when the can of blue Nutrament fell from the building and landed 10 feet from the mayor, the New York Post reports.

Adams was then quickly shepherded away by his executive protection unit. He later poked fun at the incident, saying the tossed can was a kind gesture since "they know that [he's] into health."

"I didn’t get a chance to thank them for their commitment to my nutritional health," he said at a later event at police headquarters.

Mike Hosek, a member of his detail and a detective with the NYPD's Intelligence Bureau, confirmed to the Post that he had been struck by the can.

"I was standing two feet from the mayor, I just reacted," he told the outlet. "Thank God nothing happened to him. It could have been a disaster."

Hosek, who was hit on the right forearm, said he is "bruised up" but feels "no pain."

"I hope they get whoever did this, it’s unacceptable," he added.

Adams press secretary Fabien Levy said he did not believe his boss was purposefully targeted, but confirmed that the NYPD will do their "due diligence."

"The mayor continued his press gaggle, took pictures with individuals present, talked with others, and then walked across the street to speak with more New Yorkers," he said. "He departed as scheduled and without incident."

The New York Daily News reports there was no word of any arrests as of Friday afternoon.
