NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Seven conservative City Council members published a letter on Thursday attacking Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg for prosecuting a deli worker who fatally stabbed a man who shoved him to the ground and grabbed him by the collar.

“We urge you to drop all charges against Jose Alba, the bodega worker who defended himself against a violent attack,” wrote the council members. “The fact that you are even prosecuting Mr. Alba reveals how your perverse sense of justice not only protects violent criminals, but actively seeks to destroy the lives of crime victims.”

A spokesperson for Bragg said, “We are continuing to review the evidence and the investigation is ongoing.”

The letter was signed by six Republicans and one conservative Democrat.

Bragg has become a magnet for attacks from the right for taking a less aggressive approach in his role as prosecutor, often seeking lenient sentences or refusing to prosecute certain nonviolent crimes.

In this instance, conservatives are attacking him for being too strict in his prosecution — using the fatal stabbing as a cudgel against their political opponent.

The letter was signed by Republican Councilmembers Robert Holden, Joseph Borelli, Inna Vernikov, David Carr, Joann Ariola and Vickie Paladino, as well as Democrat Kalman Yeger.
