NEW YORK (WCBS 880) – A man riding an illegal dirt bike punched an NYPD traffic enforcement agent in the face on a street in lower Manhattan, police said Saturday as they searched for a suspect.

The traffic agent, a 40-year-old man, was directing traffic at the intersection of Canal Street and Lafayette Street around 7 p.m. Friday when a man on an unregistered red and white dirt bike got into an argument with him, according to police

The man threw water at the agent, who started recording him with his cellphone, police said.

The man then punched the agent in the face before fleeing westbound down Canal Street, according to police.

The agent was transported to an area hospital, where he was treated and released.

Police believe the suspect is in his early 20s.

The attack comes as the NYPD has seized hundreds of illegal dirt bikes and ATVs this summer in a citywide crackdown.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
