NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — The ‘Hometown Heroes’ ticker tape parade on Wednesday celebrating essential workers who served the city throughout the COVID-19 pandemic will be scaled back, Mayor Bill de Blasio said Tuesday.
The ceremony at City Hall Plaza that was scheduled to follow the parade will be canceled “to keep New Yorkers safe from the heat,” de Blasio said in a press release.
"At the conclusion of the parade, the Mayor and First Lady will cheer marchers to applaud New York City’s hometown heroes," the release said.
The parade itself, however, is still set to begin at 11 a.m., starting at Manhattan’s Battery Park. Participants will travel along the Canyon of Heroes, with cooling and water stations set up along the parade route to help keep people safe during the extreme weather, the mayor said.
The parade will feature a variety of different floats, each representing a group of essential workers, including:
- Advocacy organizations
- City workers
- EducatorsEmergency food providers
- Faith leaders
- Healthcare workers
- First responders
- Hospitality and buildings workers
- Retail and bodega workers
- Social service and settlement house workers
- Transportation workers
- Utilities workers emergency food providers

View the parade
Those wishing to view the parade may do so anywhere along the parade route from Broadway from the Battery to City Hall. No ticket is needed.
Street Closures
Street closings will happen on Broadway and the surrounding area including Reade Street, Chambers Street, and Battery Place between West Thames and Broadway at approximately 9:30 a.m.
No Parking
"No Parking" rules will be in effect along the route and other street closures beginning Wednesday, July 7, at 12 a.m.
Pedestrian Crossings
Pedestrians will be able to cross Broadway:
Greenwich Street, Exchange Street, Cedar Street, Cortland Street, and Vessey Street,
ADA Accessible Veiwing
ADA accessible viewing is available at Bowling Green Park - enter on Whitehall street and Broadway or via accessible exit of the Bowling Green 4/5 subway station.
Deliveries
Deliveries in the area will be restricted for all businesses and residences beginning Wednesday, July 7, from 12 a.m. until 5 p.m.
Bus and Subway Service
The MTA will have train service changes and may close certain subway entrances and exits in the area.
City Hall R/W subway station will be closed with many MTA buses being re-routed due to street closures.
