Garbage chute at Brooklyn NYCHA building catches fire, injures 19

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A fire inside of the garbage chute of a Brooklyn NYCHA building Saturday night injured more than a dozen people, FDNY officials said.

The blaze broke out around 11 p.m. at the Farragut Houses on Bridge Street in Downtown Brooklyn, authorities said.

Multiple units were called to assist with getting the third floor fire out. It was under control about an hour later.

Twelve people were seriously injured and another six had minor injuries. A firefighter was also hurt.

An investigation into how the fire started is still ongoing.
