Group attacks off-duty officer during illegal fireworks dispute in Brooklyn: reports

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – An off-duty NYPD officer was reportedly beat up by a group of men in Brooklyn after confronting them about setting off illegal fireworks on Wednesday night.

The off-duty officer fired at least one shot as he was being attacked, but no one was struck during the altercation at Rogers Avenue and Martense Street in East Flatbush around 10 p.m., police told PIX11.

“It was a bunch of guys with fireworks, and the fireworks were going off, and then there was a mix of shots and fireworks, and everybody started running,” a witness told the Daily News.

Six to eight men attacked the officer before fleeing, according to PIX11.

No arrests have been reported.

The officer was hospitalized with non-serious injuries, police said.

Sources told the Daily News that more than a dozen large tubes used to launch fireworks were recovered at the scene, along with two shell casings.
