Hit-and-run bicyclist critically injures man crossing Manhattan street

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A man was critically injured Thursday evening after he was struck by a hit-and-run cyclist while attempting to cross a Manhattan intersection, authorities said.

At approximately 6:40 p.m., police responded to a 911 call of a pedestrian struck incident at the intersection of West 22nd Street and Eighth Avenue in Chelsea.

Upon arrival, officers observed a 44-year-old man lying on the roadway with trauma to the head.

A preliminary investigation determined that an unknown individual operating a bicycle northbound on Eighth Avenue struck the pedestrian as he was attempting to cross the roadway at the intersection.

EMS transported the man to NYC Health and Hospitals/Bellevue in critical condition.

The bicyclist fled northbound on Eighth Avenue and did not return to the scene.

There are no arrests and this collision is being investigated by the NYPD Highway District's Collision Investigation Squad.
