Officers responded to a 911 call involving an "irate man" causing a disturbance at a location on Hewlett Avenue, police said.

Matthew Berman, 24, refused verbal commands and became physically resistant as officers attempted to arrest him.

Police said an officer sustained injuries during the course of the arrest as Berman "was violent and combative."

The officer was transported to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries.

Berman was ultimately arrested and taken to a hospital for evaluation.

He is charged with second-degree assault and is due to be arraigned when medically practical, police said.
