NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — Jay-Z made it known that he is “not a lawyer” during an appearance Friday in New York City court.
The Brooklyn-born rapper appeared in Manhattan Supreme Court for hearings in a lawsuit brought by Parlux Fragrances, a perfume company that claims he did not do enough to promote its “Gold Jay-Z” scent – despite obligation to do so under a 2012 contract, according to reports.

“I’m not a lawyer,” Jay-Z, 51, reportedly said numerous times during cross-examination.
According to a Daily News report, Jay-Z, whose legal name is Shawn Carter, was asked several times if he knew when he signed the contract that he would be obligated to promote the scent. Each time, however, the rapper insisted that he was not a member of the bar.
“I did not read the contract,” Jay-Z reportedly admitted, eventually adding that he had his lawyers explain the deal to him instead.
Jay-Z also said that he has “done a lot for the Gold Jay-Z launch,” according to a Vulture report, and said he was “on trial for something I didn’t do.”
The music mogul was asked about numerous promotional events he attended for other products and was then questioned about why he did not attend in-person events for the fragrance launch, Vulture reported.
“Each product requires a different strategy. This is a creative difference, not a contractual one,” Jay-Z reportedly answered.
Palux filed the lawsuit against Jay-Z in 2016, noting that it is “virtually impossible to sustain the success of a celebrity fragrance” without celebrity appearances, the Daily News reported.
Jay-Z is allegedly countersuing Parlux for $2.7 million he said they failed to pay him in the deal.
The case is expected to carry into next week.
