NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — Children between the ages of 5 and 11 will need to get a COVID-19 vaccine shot to see a Broadway show in New York City or ring in the New Year in Times Square.

The Broadway League said Thursday that the rule, which is in accordance with Mayor Bill de Blasio's expanded vaccine mandate for indoor activities, will take effect at all 41 theaters starting Dec. 14.

Under the policy, kids may enter the theater only when accompanied by a vaccinated adult and provide proof of at least one dose of an FDA or WHO approved vaccine.

Children 12 and older must be fully vaccinated.

For now, only the Pfizer vaccine has been authorized for use in younger kids.

"With safety and security top of mind, we continue to stress the unrelenting desire that we have to keep our theatregoers, cast and crew safe. As of Sunday, December 5, we surpassed attendance with over 2 million theatregoers and completed over 2,000 performances," said Charlotte St. Martin, President of The Broadway League. "We believe that our focus on safety has helped us achieve this milestone. We look forward to welcoming everyone back to our theatres with their family and friends during this holiday season. There's no time better than now to celebrate the return to theatre!"

Meanwhile, the mayor said the New Year's Eve ball drop celebration in Times Square is moving forward with a fully vaccinated crowd, meaning young kids must also have their shots to partake.

Attendees ages 5 and up must show proof of COVID-19 vaccination to celebrate in Times Square, according to an FAQ on the event website. Unvaccinated minors under the age of 5 must be accompanied by a vaccinated adult.

The mayor said more details about the event will be released at a later date.

"We're going to continue to watch the situation with Omicron and any new developments and update people as needed. We're working with the Times Square Alliance as well as NYPD to make sure there is a system in place. So, we'll have the details on that. We'll update the public shortly, but the bottom line is if you want to participate in that amazing gathering, bring proof ID and bring your proof of vaccination," he said at his Wednesday briefing.

On Monday, de Blasio said the city is expanding its Key to NYC vaccine mandate to require vaccine proof for indoor dining, fitness and entertainment for children 5 to 11 starting next Tuesday.
