Detectives from the Suffolk County SPCA arrested Jodi Meyers, a 51-year-old employee for the Guide Dog Foundation, who allegedly left a three-year-old black labrador named Milton in a work van for five-and-a-half hours in July.

Meyers was reportedly bringing Milton for training when she left the dog locked in a crate in the hot van.

“The Suffolk County SPCA made us aware of their investigation and we are cooperating,” the Guide Dog Foundation told WCBS 880. “The health, safety, and wellbeing of the dogs in our care as well as the people we serve continue to be our top priority. Our community continues to work together as we focus on improving the quality of life for people who are blind, have low vision, or have other disabilities.”

Police charged Meyers with animal cruelty and failing to provide proper shelter and air for an animal in her custody — both misdemeanors.

She’s scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 11.
