SEASIDE PARK, N.J. (1010 WINS) — One lifeguard was killed and seven others were injured by a lightning strike at an Ocean County beach Monday afternoon, police said.

The lightning struck the 21st Ave Beach in South Seaside Park around 4:35 p.m., injuring three more lifeguards and four other beachgoers, according to the Berkeley Township Police Department.

The seven injured in the strike were triaged and treated for their injuries at surrounding hospitals, the department said.

"Our hearts are with the family and friends of the young lifeguard killed by today's horrific lightning strike on the beach in Berkeley Township, and we pray for a full recovery for those injured," Gov. Phil Murphy said in a statement.

"I've spoken to [Berkeley Township] Mayor Carmen Amato and offered the full support and assistance of our administration during this difficult time," Murphy added.

Berkeley Township police are investigating the incident. The township's ocean beaches will be closed for swimming but open for sunbathers through Thursday, as all lifeguards will be given time off, according to the township.

The identity of the lifeguard who was killed was not immeditaly clear.

"This is a tragic and heartbreaking day for our town and the entire Jersey Shore," Mayor Amato said in a statement.

"This young person was out there every day protecting the lives of others," Amato added. "Our lifeguard teams, like so many along the shore, develop special connections with our comunity throughout the summer, which makes this loss even greater."
