Man attempting to stop Washington Heights purse robbery shot, gunman sought

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Police are searching for a suspect who shot a man after he attempted to stop him from stealing a woman's purse in upper Manhattan last month, authorities said.

At 2:45 p.m. on Thursday, January 13, the suspect took a 26-year-old woman’s purse in front of 651 West 180 St. in Washington Heights, officials said.

According to the NYPD, a 31-year-old man intervened and the suspect discharged a handgun one time, striking the victim in his left foot.

The gunman fled on foot and EMS transported the victim in stable condition to NYC Health + Hospitals/Harlem.

The first victim was not injured, and her purse was recovered, authorities said.

Officials released a photo of the gunman inside of 206 Audubon Ave. before the incident.
