NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A crazed man beat a subway custodian in the face with a metal pipe in an unprovoked attack in Manhattan's Financial District, police said Thursday as they released images of the suspect.

The MTA subcontractor, a 46-year-old woman, was cleaning an E-line platform at the Chambers Street-World Trade Center station around 6:45 a.m. last Friday when the man stormed up to her with a pipe.

Out of nowhere, the man struck her in the face with the pipe in an entirely unprovoked assault, police said.

MTA employees chased after the attacker on foot, but he was able to hop on a southbound 2 train and flee the station.

The victim suffered swelling and bruising to her face. She was transported to NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue in stable condition.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
