Man brutally beats MTA dispatcher with hammer, hides under train at Chelsea station

NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- A crazed man bashed an MTA worker in the head with a hammer at a Chelsea subway station early Tuesday morning and then hid under a train as police responded.

The MTA dispatcher, 51, was attacked in a break room at the 14th Street/Eighth Avenue station, the end of the line for the L train.

The attacker, 29, burst inside the room, grabbed a hammer and beat the worker in the head with it, police said.

The suspect, who is believed to be homeless, then hid under a train until he was found and arrested by NYPD officers.

The MTA employee was taken in stable condition to Lenox Hill Hospital.

The suspect was transported to NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue for a psychiatric evaluation.

Police said he will be charged for the assault.

No other injuries were reported.
