NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A 34-year-old man was charged for repeatedly stabbing his roommate to death in an anti-Hispanic attack in Upper Manhattan in May, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg, Jr. announced on Monday.
Ismail Hosameldin was charged with murder in the second degree as a hate crime and two counts of murder in the second degree.
According to court documents, Hosameldin had been renting a room in the same apartment shared by 55-year-old Maximito Polanco-Parra and others for approximately one month.
At 4 p.m. on May 30, Polanco-Parra returned home to the Inwood apartment on Arden Street, officials said.
A few minutes later, Hosameldin, unprovoked, came from behind and stabbed Polanco-Parra 47 times in his head, neck and chest, authorities said.
Hosameldin attempted to flee but was apprehended by NYPD officers outside the apartment building.
Officers recovered several kitchen knives from Hosameldin.
Paramedics responded and Polanco-Parra was pronounced dead at the scene.
"As alleged, Maximito Polanco-Parra’s was blatantly targeted because of his race in this jarring, violent attack," Bragg said in a statement. "I join the family and friends of Mr. Polanco-Parra in mourning the loss of their loved one."
