Anthony Phillips, 51, was charged with arson and reckless endangerment, police said Monday.
Plain clothes officers recognized Phillips as the NYPD continued to investigate the fire, according to police.
The cruiser was torched outside the Pelham Bay Park subway station on the night of Jan. 6.
Officers found the marked vehicle “engulfed in flames” after returning from an inspection of the station, police said.
The officers quickly put out the fire. No injuries were reported.
The NYPD released a photo of the charred patrol car the next day and said it was investigating the fire as an arson.
