SAYVILLE, N.Y. (WCBS 880) -- A man has been arrested and charged with DWI in a fatal crash on Sunrise Highway in Sayville early Wednesday morning.

Police said a man was driving eastbound on Sunrise Highway near Exit 50 when his Toyota hit the median and then the right guardrail before coming to a stop sideways in the center lane at about 12:25 a.m.

A woman exited the vehicle, which was then hit on the driver’s side by a Jeep, according to police. The crash caused the vehicle to strike that woman.

The driver of the Toyota, identified as 46-year-old Miguel Berdecia, was pronounced dead at the scene, while the passenger, 42-year-old Lisa Hynds, was airlifted to a hospital in critical condition, police said.

The Jeep driver, identified by police as 37-year-old Daniel Lazzaro, went to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and then was charged with driving while intoxicated.

Lazzaro is scheduled to be arraigned at a later date.
