NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A 62-year-old man fell onto the subway tracks at a Bronx station after he was punched in the back of the head in an unprovoked attack Sunday night, authorities said.
The attack happened at the 149th Street – Grand Concourse station in Mott Haven at approximately 9:45 p.m., police said.
According to officials, the attacker came up behind the victim on the 4 train platform and punched him in the head, knocking him onto the tracks.
The victim was helped back to the platform and declined medical attention from first responders, officials said.
The alleged attacker, a 21-year-old man, was arrested by police at the station and charged with assault, reckless endangerment and harassment.
Police did not immediately release his name.
An investigation remains ongoing.
The stabbing was just the latest violence in the transit system. On Sunday afternoon, a 14-year-old girl was stabbed and slashed in an altercation aboard a Manhattan subway train.
“You just watch your back and hope you make it out alive,” rider Aldo Bueno told 1010 WINS.
Over the weekend, Mayor Eric Adams and Gov. Kathy Hochul announced a series of initiatives aimed at lowering crime in the subway. Adams said it was about tackling both the perception and reality of crime after multiple high-profile subway shovings and unprovoked assaults recently.
The programs include an additional 1,200 police overtime shifts in the subway, installation of surveillance cameras in every subway car and two new in-patient psychiatric facilities dedicated to treating homeless New Yorkers with severe mental health issues.
