NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A man lying on a Brooklyn parkway was killed Tuesday evening when a driver mistook him for a bag of trash and ran over him, police said.
It’s unclear why the man was lying on Ocean Parkway, near Neptune Avenue, in Coney Island around 7:20 p.m.
Police said officers responding to a 911 call found the unidentified man unconscious with severe body trauma. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
A 56-year-old man behind the wheel of the Chevy Impala that struck the victim remained at the scene and was not injured.
Police said they investigated the crash and determined that the Chevy was traveling northbound on Ocean Parkway when it struck the victim as he lay in the right lane, dragging him several feet.
The driver told police he believed the man was a bag of trash or a blanket and that he tried unsuccessfully to avoid hitting him, according to the Daily News.
No arrests have been made, police said as they continue to investigate.
