NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- Police are searching for a man who they say sexually assaulted and robbed a woman as he tried to rape her inside the lobby of her apartment building in the East Village over the weekend.

The NYPD released surveillance video Sunday of the suspect wanted in Saturday morning's attack.
The 23-year-old woman was inside the lobby of her apartment building at St. Marks Place and First Avenue at 5 a.m. when the man targeted her, police said.
The man sexually assaulted the woman and tried to rape her, according to police.
He then stole her purse and fled southbound on First Avenue, police said.
The woman was transported in stable condition to an area hospital, where she received treatment for a swollen lip and lacerations to her mouth.
Police said the woman’s purse contained a camera, a wallet and a credit card.
Less than a day after Saturday's attack, a 35-year-old woman was stabbed to death by a man who followed her into her apartment building on Chrystie Street in Chinatown early Sunday, police said. A suspect has been arrested in that case.
Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
