The children—an 8-year-old and 1-year-old—were inside the BMW X5 at Flatlands Avenue and East 89th Street in Canarsie around 6:40 p.m. when the two men hopped in.

A 37-year-old woman had left the SUV unlocked and unattended, according to police. Sources told the Daily News that the kids’ mother had briefly left the vehicle to pick up food at nearby Bear Burgers.

After stealing the SUV, the men took off eastbound down Flatlands Avenue but then abandoned it about a block away at Flatlands and Remsen avenues, police said.

It’s unclear if the men realized the children were in the vehicle, according to police, who said the kids were unharmed in the short-lived joyride.

The men, who left the keys in the SUV, fled on foot and are still being sought by police.
