Missing woman's body found in trunk of car as it's towed in Queens

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – The body of a woman was found in the trunk of a car as it was being towed in Queens on Wednesday morning, police said.

As workers were getting ready to tow the black Toyota Camry with no plates near Lefferts Boulevard and 150th Avenue in South Ozone Park, the vehicle’s trunk popped open, and a body was found inside, according to police.

The body was of a 26-year-old woman who was reported missing from the 101st Precinct in Far Rockaway on Nov. 8, 2020, police said.

The tow truck driver was searching for a spare tire after the car stopped moving, officials said.

Citizen App video shows police tape surrounding the black Camry and tow truck on Lefferts Boulevard around 10 a.m.

Police sources said the body is that of Destini Smothers, a Troy woman who went missing on Nov. 3.

It’s unclear why the Toyota was being towed, but police said it didn’t have any license plates.

No arrests have been reported. Police said an investigation is ongoing.
