The Lexington Avenue line—the busiest in the transit system—was crippled Monday morning after a third rail was severely damage at the Astor PIace stop. A signal malfunction near Fulton Street later in the day led to additional issues.

The exact cause is unknown and still under investigation, but the third rail may have been damaged by a passing work train, NYC Transit President Richard Davey said in a statement Tuesday.

Davey said a crew made temporary repairs to get trains running for now but that permanent repairs will be needed on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.

“Both issues required significant time to implement temporary repairs to get trains moving again,” Davey said. “We’ll be making permanent repairs over the next two nights to minimize additional impact on service.”

“I know many of you had a rough commute Monday on the 4/5/6, and I want to apologize directly to each of you, on behalf of New York City Transit, for what you experienced,” Davey said.

Under the comment section of the post, many New Yorkers expressed outrage for the delays and demanded that MTA do the work. One Twitter user wrote that this type of delay happens frequently.

“We didn’t get the job done for many of you," Davey said. "But I can promise you that we’ll be back at it again today, and we’ll always work to provide the best service we can for each of you.”

There were no active subway alerts connected to the issue on Tuesday afternoon, with only the 5 line impacted by an unrelated NYPD investigation.
