NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — The MTA wants to raise subway and bus fares to $2.90 by Labor Day, the agency revealed Monday.

The planned fare increase would be the first fare increase since 2019, with a 15-cent jump from the current $2.75 price.

Weekly MetroCards would increase by $1 to $34, and 30-day MetroCards would go up by $5 to $132.

Express bus fares would rise by a quarter to $7, while seven-day bus passes would increase by $2 to $64.

In addition, commuter railroads will see about a 4% increase. For toll hikes, the agency is eyeing 6% for E-ZPass and 10% for Tolls by Mail.

The increases come at a time when New York City is experiencing record ridership. Last month, the MTA saw its first 4 million-rider day since the pandemic.

The price increase is also a step toward $3 subway fares, which riders could see by 2025.

Customers will be able to offer feedback at public meetings online and in person in June, before the MTA Board votes on the fares the following month. The dates for the public meetings are expected to be announced soon.

Riders Alliance policy and communications director Danny Pearlstein slammed the announcement, saying, "Mayor Eric Adams should cut subway and bus fares in half for the million New Yorkers who can least afford the hike in his budget due next month."

"By expanding eligibility for the City's Fair Fares program to struggling New Yorkers at 200% of the federal poverty line, Mayor Adams can save almost $1,600 for families earning up to $60,000," he continued. "Expanding Fair Fares now would mean that low-income New Yorkers would never even feel the sting of a fare hike that takes effect on Labor Day."
