SOUTH RIVER, N.J. (1010 WINS) -- A 63-year-old man was arrested in the fatal hit-and-run of a 14-year-old boy on a bike, according to Middlesex County prosecutors.
The victim, Bryan Barbosa, was struck around 4 p.m. on Friday by a white work van at the intersection of Whitehead and Russel. He died from his injuries at a hospital.
Security camera footage from a resident's house shows the van continuing forward as the biker was switching street lanes. Authorities said that the driver fled the scene.
Following an investigation, Middlesex County police detained Michael Arena, 63, charging him with aggravated manslaughter and leaving the scene of an accident. While being questioned at his residence, Arena admitted to driving the white van at the time of the collision, police said.
Arena is currently being held at the Middlesex County Adult Correctional Center, awaiting a hearing.
"You just can't get it out of your head," South River resident David Gudzak told CBS News. His security camera captured the incident right outside his home, allowing the police to track down the suspect.
"Every time we come outside, I like to water the plants, and now this going to be known as the spot where a 14-year-old child lost his life."
The small community of South River is still reeling from the incident. Over the weekend, family, friends, and strangers organized a vigil for Barbosa. A GoFundMe in Bryan's memory can be found here.
